For some time now, Apple has been working diligently towards creating its own 5G modem to be integrated into future iPhones. However, recent leaks suggest that the tech giant may be considering abandoning this ambitious project. In 2018, Apple embarked on the development of its own 5G modem, and the following year, the company acquired Intel’s modem division for a staggering $1 billion. The goal was to accelerate the development process and seamlessly integrate 5G capabilities into Apple’s chips.
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. The progress on Apple’s 5G modem faced significant challenges, leading to the extension of their agreement with Qualcomm in September of this year. This agreement allows Apple to continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modems until 2026. According to reports from @Tech_Reve, Apple’s in-house 5G modem project has encountered substantial difficulties and may ultimately be abandoned.
Aside from technical hurdles, Apple also faces potential patent issues. Qualcomm currently holds patents that won’t expire until 2030, which could further complicate Apple’s path to success in this area. While this setback would undoubtedly be significant for Apple, iPhone users need not worry too much. Both current and future iPhone models will still support 5G networks, regardless of the manufacturer of the 5G modem utilized.
