Chrome is one of the most widely used web browsers globally, but it’s no secret that users have been eagerly awaiting enhanced privacy features. Google has been working on a solution to address this concern, previously known as Gnatcatcher and now referred to as IP Protection.
IP Protection is designed to safeguard Chrome users from being tracked via their IP addresses, which is often used for targeted advertising and personalized offers. While cookies can be easily deleted, IP addresses are more challenging to erase. With IP Protection, Chrome will send false information, making it difficult for tracking bots to trace users’ online activities.
According to Google’s announcement, IP Protection proposes using a proxy server for connection, ensuring privacy. It will not hide the user’s IP address but will instead provide misleading data to prevent the collection of accurate information by third parties.
Google emphasizes that IP Protection will be an optional feature, allowing users to choose whether or not to activate it. The company also states that Chrome with IP Protection will change the user’s IP address once or twice. However, the exact release date for this feature is still unknown, and it is unlikely to be available before the end of 2023. Testing is expected to take place in 2024, although specific details have not been disclosed.
